1. Introduction
This privacy policy explains how the ClipToClass mobile app for Android and iOS handles your information. We are committed to protecting your privacy and to describing our data practices accurately rather than vaguely.
The ClipToClass Chrome extension and the website at cliptoclass.com are covered by a separate policy at cliptoclass.com/privacy/. They are a different product with different practices, and describing them here would make both descriptions vaguer.
In short: the app works without an account, and everything you create stays on your phone unless you choose to make an account. If you do, your vocabulary and review progress sync so they reach your other devices and survive a lost phone. Video transcripts never leave your phone either way. The app contains no advertising, no trackers, and no analytics of any kind — we collect no usage statistics from it at all.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit health information, financial information, precise location, contacts, photos, or your browsing history outside the app.
The app has no analytics, telemetry or crash-reporting service. We do not know that you opened it, which videos you watched, or whether you use it at all.
The following never leave your phone, with or without an account:
- Video transcripts and subtitles — the text spoken in a video, in any language, however it was fetched or improved
- Your Google Gemini API key, which is held in the operating system's encrypted key store
- Your voice recordings from shadowing practice, beyond the single grading request described in Section 6
- Your shadowing scores
- Your YouTube session, if you sign in to one
3. Data Stored on Your Phone
The app stores on your device:
- Settings — interface and study language, CEFR level, subtitle appearance, playback preferences
- Your library — lessons you have opened, generated exercises and study material, saved words and notes, flashcards and review history
- Cached transcripts for videos you have opened, so re-opening one costs nothing
- Shadowing scores — the sentence, the verdict, and when it was given
- Your Gemini API key, in the operating system's encrypted key store

Deleting the app removes all of it. Signing out moves it aside so that the next person to use the phone sees an empty app; signing back in restores it.
4. Your Account, and What Syncs
An account is optional. Every part of the app works without one.
If you create one, we hold your email address and a password hash — never your password itself. These are held by Supabase, acting as our data processor, in a project hosted in the European Union.
With an account, these sync between your devices:
- flashcards and their scheduling
- your review history
- saved words and notes
- lessons you have opened, with their titles and your position in them
- generated study material
- channels you follow
Transcripts are not in that list and never sync — see Section 2.
Sync exists so your work survives a lost or replaced phone and reaches your other devices. We do not read it, analyse it, or use it to build a profile of you, and it is never sold, rented, or shared.
5. AI Processing With Your Own API Key
ClipToClass uses Google's Gemini API to improve transcripts and to generate definitions, exercises, and translations. You supply your own Google Gemini API key, and these requests go directly from your phone to Google — they do not pass through our servers, and we never see their contents or your key.
Because Google receives this content, Google's own terms and privacy policy apply to it. Note in particular that Google may use content submitted through their free API tier to improve their products, whereas paid usage is excluded from this. Please review Google's Gemini API terms to understand how your data is handled on their side.
6. Your Voice, in Shadowing Practice
Shadowing practice asks you to repeat a sentence and tells you how close you were. This is the only feature that uses the microphone, and it records only while you are pressing Record.
Two things happen with that recording:
It is sent to Google for grading. The audio is attached to a single Gemini request, using your own API key, exactly as described in Section 5 — directly from your phone, never through us. We never receive it.
Live word highlighting uses your phone's own speech recognition. The words light up as you say them because the operating system's recognition service is transcribing you. On some devices that service processes audio on the device; on others it is a cloud service operated by Google or by your phone's manufacturer, under their privacy policy rather than ours. This part is cosmetic — turning it off, or having no recognition service, costs you the colouring and nothing else.
The recording is not kept. It is written to the app's private cache so that it can be played back and graded, and it is deleted when you record again, move to another sentence, or leave the lesson. It is never uploaded to us and never included in sync. Only the resulting score is saved, and only on your phone.
The microphone is not used anywhere else in the app.
7. Embedded Video and Signing in to YouTube
Videos play through YouTube's own embedded player. Playing a video means YouTube may collect data as described in Google's privacy policy.
You may optionally sign in to YouTube inside the app, which lets you import the channels you already follow and, for YouTube Premium subscribers, play without ads. That sign-in happens in a web view against Google's own pages: we never see your Google password, and the resulting session cookies are held by the operating system's web view store, not by us. Signing out of ClipToClass destroys that session.
8. Using ClipToClass Without an Account
Without an account, everything you create lives only on your phone — and is removed if you go 48 hours without opening the app. This is deliberate, it is stated in the app, and it is the reason an account is worth making. Opening the app resets the window, so this only ever affects a phone that has been left alone.
When it happens, the app empties on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, because there was never anywhere to send it.
9. Data Sharing and Transfers
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We do not transfer data to third parties for advertising, credit assessment, or any purpose unrelated to the app's single purpose.
Three third parties receive data, each in the narrow case described above:
- Google, for AI requests you initiate with your own key (Section 5), for grading a shadowing recording (Section 6), and for video playback (Section 7)
- Supabase, our data processor, which holds your account and the synced data listed in Section 4, in the European Union
- Your phone's speech recognition provider, if it is a cloud one, for live word highlighting (Section 6)
10. Children's Privacy
ClipToClass is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
11. Your Rights, and Deleting Your Account
Data on your phone is entirely under your control: deleting the app removes all of it, and requires nothing from us.
If you have an account, you can delete it from inside the app — Settings → Account → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and permanent. It removes your account and everything stored under it: flashcards, review history, saved words, lessons, generated material and followed channels. There is no recovery window, so export anything you want to keep first.
If you have already uninstalled the app, or cannot sign in, write to the address in Section 13 from the address on the account and we will delete it for you. We may ask you to confirm the address before we do; that check is the only thing standing between an account and anybody who knows its email address. 12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above and, where the change affects what is collected, by a notice in the app. Continued use after changes indicates acceptance.
